Diane constantly insults Sam and what she perceives as his lack of intelligence and Sam constantly makes excuses to stay in a relationship with her, without any real “hook” to keep him there. But the relationship, like so many of the relationships in Cheers does not seem at all real. In its second season, the main characters, Sam Malone and Diane Chambers, have the chance to continue evolving through their newfound relationship. In the second season, the characters make very little sense and while Cheers may be considered classic television, it “reads” as remarkably average (at best) sitcom fare. So, with the second season of Cheers, I found myself unsurprised that I continued to find the show lacking in substance. Sam evolves so quickly from a womanizer to a man who might actually stand a chance in a relationship with the intellectual Diane Chambers that it is hard to buy how emotionally flaccid he can be at several points later in that season. I also took issue with the learning curve of the character of Sam Malone. In other words, it was preoccupied with setting up the next one-liner or zinger instead of telling a story and letting the humor come where it naturally did.

The Basics: In its second season, Cheers has the romantic relationship between Sam and Diane in full swing and creates surprisingly bland television with it.Īrguably my biggest issue with the first season of Cheers ( reviewed here!) was that the show worked so hard to set up jokes that it barely told stories with its episodes. Finding out who this Lothario is becomes an all-consuming thought for Woody.The Good: Moments of humor, A few performance moments. However, Carla notices a hairy large thumb in one of the photos, meaning the pictures were taken by a man. Meanwhile, Woody receives some somewhat suggestive pictures from Kelly in Paris. Sam is slowly descending into madness from this situation which culminates into the ultimate in insults for Sam. Hill will only take down the wall when Sam starts to pay rent. Sam and Hill refuse to do business with each other, which leads to Hill bricking off the bar's hallway - the one leading to his washrooms and pool room. But the last straw for Sam is that Hill wants his parking spot back, which Sam has always used to park his beloved Corvette. And a consequence of Hill's ownership of Melville's is that the bar is filled with a different yuppie clientele, who most importantly don't know that Norm's bar stool is only for Norm.
Hill wants a floor mat at the bottom of the interior stairs and wants to use the bar as the restaurant's lounge which includes treating Cheers' staff as Melville's staff. The first spoken threat from Hill is the fact that he actually owns the property of the bar's pool room and washrooms, implying that he wants Sam to meet all his demands or else. Hill and Sam's relationship starts off slowly and gets worse and worse. John Allen Hill, a famous Manhattan restaurateur, has bought Melville's, which Rebecca thinks is going to boost business for Cheers.
